Georg Schulz studied Chemistry at the University of Graz (Magister degree in 1987; doctorate in 1990). He completed his education as an accordionist with Elsbeth Moser (Hanover) as well as master classes with Friedrich Lips and Lech Puchnovski before studying with Mogens Ellegaard at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG). Schulz was the first student to complete the Magister programme with specialisation in accordion (1992). Since then, he has been teaching at KUG, where he obtained university teaching credentials in accordion (first ever habilitation in an artistic discipline at an Austrian university of arts). He has played concerts in Austria and abroad, specialising in contemporary chamber music and performed many times with Klangforum Wien. He has also written and performed theatre music
From 2000 to 2003, Georg Schulz was Vice-Dean of Studies (Instrumental Studies, Music Education – Voice and Instruments (IGP) and Jazz) and, from 2003 to 2007, he was Vice-Rector for Teaching.
In addition to his career in arts and education, he completed a part-time university continuing education programme in higher education management at the University of Klagenfurt as well as a part-time continuing education programme in higher education and science management at the Danube University Krems.
From 2007 to 2012, Georg Schulz acted as Vice-Rector of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. Between 2014 and 2020, he was Vice-President of the European association of higher music education (AEC, Association Européenne des Conservatoires). Furthermore, Georg Schulz was a member of the Executive Board of the International Music Council (IMC) based at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris from 2017 to 2019. Schulz participated as an expert in a variety of international accreditation and evaluation processes. He is a member of the expert pool of the Institutional Evaluation Programme of the European University Association (EUA). Since 2015, he has been a member of the EUA steering committee and, since 2017, he has served on the Board of this EQAR-listed organisation dedicated to quality assurance.
Georg Schulz became Rector of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz again on March 2020, he took up a further term of office in March 2024.
